We spent very little time in the tourist centers like Puerto Vallarta but we did enjoy Mazatlan, a town of half a million people and a side trip to Copala. Mazatlan is a favorite of students on Spring Break and wintering Americans and Canadians. We took in some nightlife and stocked up on familiar food at Walmart, Sam's Club and Safeway.
We often shopped at roadside bread, fish, fruit and vegetable markets as we travelled through the countryside. The seafood was unfamiliar but delicious, often served as one whole fish.
The coconut guy was friendly just like everyone else we met . We were very spoiled by having hairdressers, RV cleaners etc. come right to our campsite. Laundry was delivered back to us nicely folded.
The Huichol people are descendents of the Aztecs and live in scattered remote villages in the Sierra Madre Occidental  mountains. They have managed to preserve much of their culture including beautiful bead art. Theresa bought several bracelets and gourd bowls. The bowls are decorated with beads placed one by one in a beeswax and resin base. Their art is internationally renowned.
